The Effects of War on Marriages and Family

Undoubtedly war adds stress to family life and marriage; it can even cause great conflict for that matter. But where is the line drawn, when families are falling apart after a soldier returns to civilian life, is it a weak marriage, or is it the institution of the military that can be to blame? Did my parents divorce, after my step-dad got back from Iraq, simply because they were not a strong couple after even ten years? Or is society putting the needs of military families and soldiers themselves on the back burner to fend for themselves and ultimately figure out how to survive on their own with issues never experienced before. Consequently divorce is high and suicide rates are unbelievably through the roof and too close to home. So what is the answer; should there be more government support and programs to help those coming back from the battle field, or do we truly live in a society that only cares about number one, me myself and I. If this is true then in the mean time military families will figure out how to deal, right?

  1. It seems like a government and society that looks on military veterans as "heroes" would pay a little more attention to their needs as they come home. Why do veterans make up a substantially large part of the homeless people in the US? Physiological issues can my treated yes but rarely do people take into the count the lasting mental effects any time in combat has on the ease at which an individual adjusts back into society and in turn their family. As for what the government can do to fix the situation? More monetary help for veterans/their families, more restraint on who can join...less unnecessary wars....

  2. i think government should give therapy to veterans and their families. they will see, and probably even do, a lot of things that they should never have to. And it's all in the name of our freedom, don't you think the least we could do is help them learn how to deal with it?

  3. i totally agree, and think that the government should have to have some sort of agreement with the families that were/and are involved with the military. each family suffers in ways no one can fully understand from the after effects of being involved in the war. i think it is only right for the government to lend a helping hand by providing therapy and treatment for any family that wants it.

  5. I do agree with everyone else that the government should provide some type of therapy for families that have family memebers in the army. I also do think that when people do find out that they are getting sent out to serve their country that they rush into marriage. They are putting their loved one into a situtation they might not be ready for. With them getting sent out they are putting their marriage on pause then. Which may cause problems in families relating to divorce that therapy possibley wouldnt be able to help.

  6. I think the government should provide therapy or something for the soliders. Marrying a solider could be a difficult thing having them always gone and only coming home for two weeks every once in a while? How do they "maintain" their relationship and communicate. Also what are the effects on the children? Do they know they have a dad or do they just think it is a figment of their imagination. Do they feel like dad or even mother abandoned them by going to war?
